The Health Collection: Gold Fever

We know that you’d rather be out fishing right now. So would we. While we may not be able to make that happen, hopefully this might help. The International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) and Fly Fusion Films have opened up our video vaults to provide you with some excellent fly-fishing films to help get you through these trying times.

Keep your eyes peeled every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for another film from the archive. Now for today’s featured film: “Gold Fever” by Burl Productions.

Gold Fever is when you get the taste of gold and you will stop at nothing to get more. Jobs, relationships, obligations are disregarded. The only thing you can think about is another nugget. In this case those nuggets are huge wild brown trout from the heart of the Mother Lode in the Sierra Foothills of California.

From everyone here at Fly Fusion, we want to wish you an amazing holiday season and an awesome 2021. With our most recent entry into the Winter Collection, we explore something we’ve grown all too familiar with in 2020: Solitude. But in this case, it’s a good thing.

Episode Overview: A long drive down backcountry logging roads places Jim, Derek and Paula (Fly Fusion’s former social media editor) into a basin where no other soul exists. They travel the proverbial extra mile and find large trout that have not seen artificial flies in years. The eager trout make for stunning cinematography and an unforgettable day on the water.

We want to welcome you back to the Winter Collection, Happy Holidays Edition! We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy “Blown Away,” from season three of Fly Fusion TV.

Fly Fusion Magazine editors Derek Bird and Jim McLennan show up at one of Jim’s favorite stretches of river just as major windstorm blows down the valley. They set up the rods in hopes that the wind will push terrestrials onto the water. When the wind finally dies down, their persistence is rewarded with a number of spectacular trout.

Welcome back to the Winter Collection. Up next is one of our favorite episodes from Fly Fusion TV. Check out “Secrets” right here.

With over 7 billion people on the planet, it’s difficult to find places where the water runs cold and clear and where the human footprint is nearly non-existent. Jim, Derek, and Paula (Fly Fusion’s former social media editor) helicopter into one of these places, and what they find far exceeds their expectations. In fact, the fly fishing is so good they can’t help but keep it a secret.

Up next in the Winter Collection: Surface. Surface, a new short from Fly Fusion Films and Vantage Point Media House, is a film about extraordinary adventures that create lifelong memories. After a floatplane trip through the rugged and towering Cariboo Mountains, the anglers float down a nearly inaccessible glacial stream. What they experience along the way is nothing short of unforgettable.

We know this year’s been difficult. It’s been long, it’s been crazy beyond all belief, and we’re here to give you a place to watch some excellent fly fishing footage, relax, and put all of the insanity behind you, even for just a little while. For the next few weeks, we’ll be sending out some videos for you to watch every Monday, just to get your week started off on the right foot. This week, we’ve got one of our favorite web episodes of Fly Fusion TV: Eden. Hopefully it’ll put you in a good place.

“Eden”— For fly anglers, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find pristine and unpopulated rivers. In this episode Fly Fusion Founding Editor, Derek Bird—along with Associate Editor Jim McLennan— explore a river where they catch large rainbows and bull trout and where the only other anglers on the stream that day are the grizzly bears.

The Health Collection: Baja

Located in northwest Mexico, the Baja Peninsula features one of the world’s most diverse and fantastic saltwater fisheries. On any given day, there’s no telling what kind of fish you’ll be able to tempt with a fly.

But the real draw here is a finely coiffed fish with flaring dorsal fins and an attitude to match: the one and only roosterfish.

The Health Collection: Chrome

There is nothing in this world quite like a steelhead fresh from the sea. Its colors radiate and shimmer in unreal streaks of silver and green. Its resplendent leaps are powered by the one primal instinct it can’t overpower: survival.

The very idea that a small, trout-sized fish could survive in the ocean for several years and then return to its home as a broad-shouldered, silvery missile is impressive. That it does this in order to spawn and continue its species is inspiring, especially now.

Join the Capture Adventure Media crew on a celebration of wild steelhead in The Buffet Series: Chrome, a short film that takes you to the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula in search of steel.

The Health Collection: Mako

Imagine the world getting back to normal. What does that look like now? Does it still involve anglers catching sharks on the fly? It had better, because we’re not sure we want to live in a world without something so singularly unbelievable, heart-pumping, and just plain awesome.

If your quarantine needs a little pick-me-up, you might want to strap in for our next offering: “Mako”

Courtesy of Angler’s Eye Media, this adventure searches out one of the strongest, most aggressive fish on the planet: the mako shark. Off the coast of southern California exists one of the world’s top mako fisheries. With speed, strength, and what may be the most acrobatic aerials of any game fish in the ocean, the mako will test not only every bit of gear and knowledge available, but also the will and determination of any angler that sets out to find—and catch—these world-class apex predators.
